A biochemist and a breakthrough
Biochemist Brian Welsby had spent years on a question most supplement makers skip: the form each nutrient takes, not just the list of names. His answer was Food State nutrition, with minerals cultured in yeast and vitamins complexed the way they occur in food, rather than isolated synthetics pressed into a tablet.
In 1998 he built a complete daily formula around that idea, 34 vitamins, minerals and plant nutrients in one scoop, and called it Breakthrough. The same year, Paula Radcliffe, then a track and cross-country international, started taking it. She never stopped.
